no self-respecting tuner in Japan would have a car without very carefully tuned fuel/timing maps. They have many options for engine management tuning in Japan for many years now... Several companies in Japan have been offering EPROM emulators that allows on-the-fly map tracing and adjustment (Grid, etc). There are also plenty of piggy back ECUs (HKS F-Con, Trust E-Manage, SIFT, etc), plug-in replacement standalone ECUs (Apexi Power-FC), and also there are many many tuners that will custom tune and burn a EPROM for your car for $500 or less. We are many years behind Asia and Japan on engine management tuning... As for EGTs, most tuners consider that a bad tuning tool, and IMHO a knock meter and wideband O2s are the way to go. Pentroof also looks into other more exotic data, such as exhaust manifold pressures, to tune their cars for reliability and power; most top tuners have many such tricks/secrets they employ to get the most out of their cars.
